Bridget F. Rowe was born and raised near Seattle in Renton, WA. She has always loved creating art and became known among friends and family as an artist at an early age. Her interest in art history was piqued by several art history courses. In high school, she was able to hone her skills through drawing and watercolor painting classes.
She began her college education at Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA in the fall of 2011. Although she began as an Elementary Education major with an endorsement in Art, she soon realized that education was not the field in which she wanted to be. However, she still wanted to be involved in art in some way, so she switched to a double major in Art: Fine Art Studio and Social Work. At Dordt, Bridget took a wide range of art classes, including sculpture, painting, drawing, and ceramics. She graduated in May 2015 with her B.A. and B.S.W.
At Dordt, Bridget focused on painting and drawing. She explored abstraction frequently, creating several series, including her “Splatter” and “Geometric Texture” series. Bridge also enjoyed using the technique of glazing and layering oil paint over a charcoal under drawing. Another interest of hers was creating sculptural pieces, particularly handbuilt ceramic animals. A favorite piece of Bridget’s is a performance art piece that began her interest in themes which she continued to explore throughout her college career. Bridget asked friends and family to provide three words they thought described her. After collecting the words, she wrote each one on her arms and kept them there for an entire day. This piece looked at the relationship between the artist and those who she knew, perceptions that people have of one another, and how one can be defined and affected by words.
In addition to creating art, Bridget also has experience teaching art classes. She taught two sections of an art history class to students ranging from 2nd to 5th grade in 2012. During each class period, Bridget would share a brief biography of a particular artist, show examples of that artist’s works, and guide the students through the process of creating their own piece in the style of the artist. The artists covered in these 8 week classes include Michelangelo, John Constable, and Claude Monet. Bridget also tutored students in drawing. Bridget loves to encourage young artists to develop their talents and to grow in their knowledge of art.
Bridget exhibited work twice in the annual Dordt/Northwestern art show. In December 2012, her handbuilt ceramic piece entitled “502” was displayed at Dordt College. The next year, Bridget had two pieces: “Chaotic Galaxies” and “1961” in the show, which took place at Northwestern College.
In February 2014, Bridget exhibited in the Dordt College Junior Art Show along with five other Dordt art students. She displayed two series: “Splatter” and “Geometric Texture,” as well as a charcoal and colored pencil drawing, and two sculptural pieces.
Bridget was invited to participate in the National Conference of Undergraduate Research at the University of Kentucky in April 2014. She displayed an abstract expressionism piece: “Chaotic Galaxies” and gave a fifteen minute artist talk about her most recent paintings, particularly her abstract “Splatter” series.
Many of Bridget’s pieces focus on the themes of relationships, connections, and interactions between people. As a social worker, Bridget is influenced by relationships and works with people every day. Humans are endlessly fascinating to Bridget and she enjoyed psychology classes which helped her develop her understand the human brain and relationships.
In April 2015, Bridget presented her Senior Art Show, titled Perceptions, at Dordt College. She explored aspects of personal identity, relationships, and the perceptions humans create about one another through a variety of works. Charcoal, acrylic, mixed media, colored pencil, and collage were all used in this show. Featured works included self-portraits, portraits of friends and family, and some abstract paintings.
Bridget F. Rowe currently lives and works in Broomfield, CO.
